THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN US & A GENERAL MASSAGE PRACTICE
All of our highly skilled Certified Massage Therapists have completed a minimum of 750 hours of massage therapy training including: Swedish Massage, Medical Massage, Shiatsu, Anatomy and Physiology. Our therapists have also completed and a minimum of 70 additional hours of pregnancy and baby specific continuing education. Our therapists have been hand selected for their strong connection to this work, and each one possesses relevant experience, professional, personal, and academic to draw from, including: Being a Mother, Masters in Maternal & Child Health, Neonatal Nurse, Childbirth Educator, Doula, Infant Massage Instructor, and more.
Pregnancy positioning for comfort, safety, and optimal circulation
A pregnant woman’s body presents special circulation concerns when it comes to positioning. After thirteen weeks, the traditional prone (facing down) and supine (facing up) positions are no longer appropriate. With individual assessment and input from the client, the therapist will select an appropriate position sequence for the session. We have three major positions, and over ten subtle modifications to address all possible pregnancy related issues that affect the way a woman should be positioned (such as trimester, single or multiple gestation, pubic symphasis separation, diabetes monitor, uterine tilt and on). Special contour cushions that protect belly and breasts are used to support her safely and comfortably in prone (facing down) position. Additional wedges and bolsters can support her in a semi-reclining position (face up at 45 to 60 degrees incline) with an extra thick bolster under her knees to decompress her lower spine. Supported side lying position is also available if she is uncomfortable being on her belly for any reason physical or emotional. After much experience working with pregnant women in side position, we have refined our abilities such that a side-lying massage with us is comfortable, relaxing, and deeply therapeutic, unlike many other massage practices where side-lying sessions make up a much smaller percentage of their work.
Knowledge of pregnancy specific discomforts and how to address them
Familiarity with the common pregnancy discomforts and how to address them enables us to provide more comprehensive care than a general massage practitioner. Some of the common ales which can be addressed are: sciatica, low back pain, hip pain, rib pain, calf cramp, swelling, heartburn, nausea, trouble sleeping, anxiety, stress, and high blood pressure.
Social and Emotional Context
The other side of what makes the Hoboken Prenatal Massage Experience different is our deeper understanding of the social and emotional aspects of being pregnant. Pregnancy is a time of profound transformation. With a heightened emotional sense pregnant women can feel more vulnerable than usual. So we always ensure our clients feel understood and supported. We also maintain a library of books and informational handouts for free.
Limits of practice and knowing who to refer to for further care
Often times we encounter a situation that we recognize but are unable to address because of the limits to our scope of practice. To help clients in these situations we keep an extensive book of related caring professionals who we know and trust, who we can refer clients to, so that they can receive the proper care they need.

The Postnatal Difference at Hoboken Prenatal Massage
After the baby is born is when therapeutic touch is needed the most. Childbirth is physically and emotionally intense. In many countries around the world women are given 30 to 40 days to recover from the birth of a child. Sadly, in our culture, women are expected to get up and go as if nothing happened. This can lead to depression and physical symptoms. If a woman receives nurturing care during this critical period, she will recover more completely and be able to take on the responsibility of mothering with strength and love.
In our postnatal massages we account for hormonal, structural, functional, and emotional differences of the postnatal period. For example: from the hormonal perspective, elevated levels of clottting factor remain in the blood for 8 weeks postpartum. To rule out the presence of a blood , which could cause an embolism if dislodged, we perform a homincheck (or flex test), before massaging the legs. If the woman has had a C-Section, we provide special contour cushions which do not put pressure on her incision site. We also avoid techniques which cause pulling on the incision, such as passive stretches of the legs. We provide special contour cushions that protect breasts in case of breast engorgement. We are familiar with the common muscular-skeletal distortions which can result from strenuous pushing at birth and the new repetitive activities involved in caring for an infant.
Although from a hormonal perspective, a woman’s body is back to normal after 6 months, some of the possible muscular-skeletal trauma of pregnancy and birth can effect a woman well into old age if unsupported. For example, weakened pelvic floor muscles can lead to urinary incontinence. many Women develop a diastitis recti (or separation of the abdominal muscles), which can cause weakness, back pain, and the appearance of a pouch or bulge in the abdominal region. Our therapists evaluate clients’ particular occurrences of weakness and spasm and recommend appropriate stretches, self-massage techniques, and strengthening exercises, to help clients get back to shape.
Postnatal Massage is recommended immediately following birth, and several times per week if possible during the postpartum recovery period. Once feeling back to normal clients are encouraged to resume monthly or bi-monthly massage sessions for basic wellness care and maintenance.
